Baltazar arrived at Stade Rennais from Porto with the reputation as an experienced goalscorer, and expectations were suitably high. Serial goalscorer with Gremio, with Celta Vigo, and especially at Atlético Madrid, the striker with 6 Brazil caps to his name, was supposed to take on the mantle of François Omam-Biyik, who had just left the club, and ensure continuity in attack. In the quest to stave off relegation from the First Division, the Brazilian was clearly off the pace. Whilst he scored a goal every other game in Spain, he only managed 6 goals in 34 appearances for Rennes. Nevertheless, the relegation play-off against Strasbourg still gave him the chance to become a folk-hero in Rennes, but even here, he didn’t deliver. At the end of the season, he left Rennes to return home to Goias in Brazil .
