With the jackpot windfall coming from increased TV Broadcast rights, and a generous purse allocated by the majority shareholder Pinault, as well as the sales of Nonda and Sommeil, Stade Rennais invested massively in the Summer of 2000. Along with the Brazilian delegation of Cesar, Fabiano, Vander and Lucas, Lefillatre’s recruitment team also secured the services of Mario-Hector Turdo. The Argentine striker arrived from Celta Vigo for the exorbitant sum of 12 Million Euros. Despite his undoubted eagerness to succeed, Turdo demonstrated that he was not up to the task from a technical and tactical point of view, completely dismantling the expectations arising from the cost of his transfer. Used up-front by Le Guen in the opening months of the season, he stood out for goals scored on the break at Bastia, Saint-Etienne and at Sedan. But in view of the unflattering statistics of 3 goals in 992 minutes of football, the club loaned out the transfer flop to Las Palmas in January 2001, and then ended up tagging him along in the squad, in the treatment room, and on a procession of loan spells until October 2004, when his contract was cancelled.
