Marcio Emerson arrived in Rennes in the Summer of 2007, and arrived with the flattering reputation of a prolific goalscorer from his spells in Japan and Qatar. The General Manager Pierre Dréossi presented this recruit as a sporting gamble. Despite the will of the player to succeed in Europe, the size of the risk became self-evident a few months later, when he was unable to break through in a league where defences which were more rigourous and tactically more astute than in the countries where he had played previously (Brazil, Japan and Qatar). The player failed to integrate in the group, and deal with the competition for places. He was never able to demonstrate his pace, his dribbling skills or goalscoring instinct. In 5 months, he only managed 6 appearances, the Brazilian returned to Qatar and Al-Sadd, without a single goal to his name. Stade Rennais were still able to rub their hands together despite the failed gamble, as they were able to re-sell Emerson for more that they had paid for him originally, and made 2 Million Oil Dollars out of the deal.
