Born in Rennes, Willy Barru gave everything as a footballer at Stade Rennais FC. In 2003, he was only really a stop-gap player in the side which won the Gambardella Cup (French FA Youth Cup). He never got to experience the same success as his team-mates Faty, Gourcuff, Bourillon or Briand, and wasn’t offered a professional contract. In 2005, after a full season in CFA (French 4th Division), he finally joined an ambitious Vannes team - who were in National (French 3rd Division) at the time.
