1985/1986 Season 1985/1986

Division 1
Coupe de France
Freshly promoted after a dramatic season with the epic promotion play-offs, Rennes were back in the French First Division just a year after being relegated. At the beginning of the 1985/1986 season, the Red and Blacks were seen as ambitious in their recruitment, with the signings of experienced players, such as Didier Christophe, Guy Lacombe and Gérard Lanthier. The squad was destabilised, however, by the departures of some of their key players, for example Bousdira and Morin. The first few months of the season proved to be promising, in terms of their results, with Rennes quickly finding their feet in mid-table. But an inconsistant spell mid-season left them rooted to the 12th or 13th spot, and then a run of four defeats in five matches saw the Red and Blacks plummet to 18th in the table, a position which would have left them in the relegation play-offs, with 10 matches to go. In the end, Rennes would finish unbeaten in their last six games, helping them to finish 13th in the league. They finished their season with 34 points to their name, with the 18th best attack, and 6th best defence. This was the first time that Rennes had managed to retain their top-flight status for more than one season since 1974. In the French Cup, Rennes had a very good cup run, getting as far as the Semi-Finals, where they were eventually knocked out over two legs in a closely-fought encounter with Olympique de Marseille.
