After being deprived of key players Cech and Arribagé during the close-season, and having turned down the opportunity to take part in the Intertoto, Stade Rennais decided that the signings of Isaksson and Adailton would be sufficient. The understanding between up-and-coming young players (Faty, Bourillon, Didot), promising internationals such as Källström and Frei, and experienced Ligue 1 professionals (Jeunechamp, Sorlin, Monterrubio) was disappointing in the first half of the season, with only 6 victories and 13th place in the league for Bölöni’s side. As of 2005 however, Rennes were irresistible at home, taking 23 out of a possible 27 points, and went on an unbeaten run of ten matches to leave them in 4th in the league table. Handing out a 4-0 drubbing to Strasbourg in the last home game was enough to qualify them for the League Cup, even if they did subsequently lose their final league fixture of the season in Paris (0-1). A historical success for the trio Cueff, Dréossi and Bölöni, who achieved direct European qualification for the first time in 34 years. Their success was in no small measure down to Monterrubio (best passer in the league), and the Swiss Frei was Ligue 1’s top goalscorer with 20 goals (of which 13 were scored in 2005.)
