2005/2006 Season 2005/2006

Ligue 1
Coupe de France
Coupe de la Ligue
Round of 32
Group stage
After a historic season, qualifying for the UEFA Cup, Stade Rennais was able to keep the entire squad intact during the close season, and added Edman, Hadji and Utaka. The start to the season, however, was nothing short of catastrophic. 4 defeats in 5 matches, including 2 thrashings at Le Mans (0-4) and Nancy (0-6). The qualification against Osasuna in Europe was followed by four defeats in the group stage. After the winter break in 2006, the team was transformed by the outstanding duo of Utaka and Källström. However, after winning at Nantes for the first time in 41 years, Stade Rennais slumped to five straight defeats, only to bounce back with eight straight wins in Ligue 1, including a sparkling 4-1 at Lyon. On matchday 35, that run was ended at Nice, and the Bretons failed to win a single match out of their last five fixtures, of which the French Cup semi-final in Marseille, which they lost 0-3. Having been two goals to the good against Lille in the last game of the season, thanks to Frei, Rennes could only manage a draw, and thus missed out on a place in the UEFA Cup.
