The 2021/2022 season will live long in the memories of Rennes supporters. Several historical club records were broken over the course of the season: most wins, most league goals, and best goal difference for a single season. Add to that the unbelievably high level of football put on display by Stade Rennais throughout the season. Despite losing several big names in the close season (notably Camavinga, Maouassa and Niang), Rennes made some shrewd signings, bringing in talented players to replace them, with the likes of Majer, Laborde, Santamaria and Sulemana. The Red and Blacks had a stuttering start to the Ligue 1 season however, slipping to 16th spot after their defeat at Marseille on matchday 6. The Rennes steamroller finally clicked into gear thereafter, going on a 13-match unbeaten run in all competitions, taking the Red and Blacks upto second in the table. Alongside a good run in the league, Rennes became the first French team to take part in the newly-created Europa Conference League, and they finished top of the group, qualifying in the process for the round of 16, where they were unfairly eliminated by Leicester owing to an inexistant VAR. Back in the championship, Rennes had another wobbly patch in mid-season, with three straight defeats taking them out of the race for a top-3 spot. Nevertheless, Rennes returned to winning ways and, with an attractive style of play, they succeeded in climbing back to finish the season in fourth place, qualifying for Europe for the fifth season in a row. Rennes ended up with the second-ranked attack and 4th-best defence. Martin Terrier finished the season as third in the table of top marksmen in the French league, with 21 goals. Bruno Genesio was named Manager of the Season. The only real disappointment of the season came in the French Cup, knocked out by lowly Second Division side Nancy in the Round of 32.
