Round of 32
Freshly crowned Champions of the French Second Division in the previous season, Stade Rennais were back in the top flight for the first time in six years. Their objective for the season was survival, and the Red and Blacks were prudent in their recruitment, notably bringing in internationals Horsmann and Mazur, along with the experienced Marais, Bezaz and Stopyra. On the other hand, Rennes lost their goalscorer Peretz, and goalkeeper Dusé, the latter being replaced by Pierrick Hiard, who had returned to the club. Unfortunately, the club's start to the season was nothing short of catastrophic, having to wait until matchday 6 for their first victory of the season, having started with four defeats and a draw. From the 9th round of games, Rennes were unable to stay away from the relegation zone, and they were stuck to the last three positions of the league tables right to the end of the season. They ended the season with a dismal run of just one win in 16 matches, and relegation was already confirmed with two games to spare. Stade Rennais finished 20th; with the 12th-best attack, and 18th-best defence. Their top scorer, Stopyra, ended the season with just 9 goals to his name. In the French Cup, Rennes' cup run was short and sweet, knocked out in the Round of 32 by neighbours and rivals Nantes (0-2 and 0-7).
